SASSA e-KYC Verification Rule for 2026

SASSA encountered millions of fraudulent Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applications in previous years. To address this issue, the agency has implemented a new e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) verification process. This process requires each applicant to confirm their identity using facial recognition and thumbprint verification.

Check e-KYC Status

To complete the e-KYC verification:

  1. Visit a SASSA office in your area with your smart ID card.
  2. Use the facial recognition device and biometric system available at the office to verify your identity.
  3. After successful verification, you can submit your SRD grant application.
  4. This procedure ensures secure and accurate processing of SRD grant applications.

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)

The South African Social Security Agency was introduced in April 2005 under the Social Assistance Act of 2004 to assist the Department of Social Development (DSD) in the social security system.

The purpose of this agency is to reduce the poverty ratio, provide quality food, and mitigate malnutrition in women and infants.

South Africa has an inflation rate of 31.4% in 2026, according to SANews. This is a huge number, and that is why SASSA was formed to provide basic needs for living to the vulnerable citizens.

South Africa had an estimated population of 63 million people in 2025. Females represented 51% of the total population, while males accounted for 49%, which equals about 30.9 million men.

The country continues to face major economic challenges. According to World Bank data, the poverty rate reached 68.1% in 2025, which means a large share of the population lives below the national poverty threshold.

Currently, SASSA is managing 8 social grants. Each grant is designed for a specific category of people, such as the disabled, elderly people, and stunting children, etc.

How to Submit an Appeal for SRD Grant?

SASSA is very negotiable when it comes to dealing with declined applications. If SASSA has declined an application, that does not mean it is the final decision. However, there is a way to appeal, and it is called an appeal for SRD reconsideration.

SASSA Status Check Results Meanings

So here is a scenario! You registered for the SRD grant and got confused when you checked your payment status on the official SRD website. Now you are thinking, what does the meaning of SASSA status, such as:

  • Pending
  • Approved
  • Declined
  • Failed
  • Reapplication pending

Now you need to know whether your status is approved or not. right? That is why I have solved your problem and written about all the SASSA status result meanings below.

Pending

This is a common status, and 95% applicants get this status for the first 15 days after submitting the application. The meaning of this status is that SASSA has received your application, but all the processes are underway.

Declined

You will be sad to hear that this status means your application is not approved. You need to check the exact reason for this declined status.

Failed Due to Identity Verification Failed

Another declined status from SASSA, but the reason is ID details. You must know that SASSA uses the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) database to check the identity of all the applicants. In case SASSA found any issues with your ID, they marked your application as Identity Verification Failed.

Self-Exclusion Response Found

Applicants who are earning more than R624 per month are not allowed to receive the grant payment. If you are earning more than this amount, you will get the status of “self-exclusion response found”.

Permanently Blocked

You checked the status and found “permanently blocked”? Unfortunately, SASSA has found something that is either fraudulent or extremely illegal about your application, and you are permanently blocked from SASSA.

Means Income Source Found

You are either a full time employed or earning enough money to support yourself or your family, so your application has been declined.

Banking Details Pending

To get the SRD payment, clients have to provide their banking details. In case the client hasn’t added the bank account details, then this status will appear on the screen.

Reapplication Pending

The SASSA grant is available for a continuous 3 months, and after that, every beneficiary has to apply for reapplication. This is to determine whether the beneficiary is still eligible for the R370 payment or not.

How are SASSA Payment Dates Issued?

SASSA issues payment dates for grants based on a structured monthly schedule. These dates are set to ensure beneficiaries receive their funds consistently and to manage the disbursement efficiently across all recipients.

Each grant type, including SRD (Social Relief of Distress), Child Support Grant, and Older Persons Grant, follows a specific payment cycle.

Step 1: Grant Type Determination

SASSA determines the payment date based on the type of grant. Each grant has a designated schedule to avoid overlapping and ensure smooth processing.

Step 2: Beneficiary Database Verification

SASSA verifies the beneficiary database to confirm active recipients. Only verified and approved applicants are included in the payment schedule.

Step 3: Monthly Schedule Publication

SASSA publishes the monthly payment dates on its official channels, including the website and notice boards at local offices.

Step 4: Fund Disbursement

On the assigned date, SASSA disburses payments through approved methods such as bank transfers, SASSA cards, or retail partners.

SASSA Grant Types and Names 2026

SASSA has 8 types of grants, and here are the names:

Old Age Pension / Older Person Grant

The Older Person Grant in South Africa provides financial support to senior citizens who cannot work because of advanced age. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) issues this grant to eligible individuals aged 60 years or older.

The monthly payment amount depends on the beneficiary’s age:

  • R2,185 per month for individuals aged 60 to 75 years
  • R2,315 per month for individuals aged above 75 years

This grant helps older citizens cover basic living expenses such as food, electricity, and healthcare needs.

Disability Grant

More than 5% of adults are living with disabilities, according to Statistics South Africa. SASSA has a grant for these people. All the citizens who have a severe disability and can not work due to their disability, permanently or temporarily, can get this grant. The payment is R2,320 per month.

Child Support Grant

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) reported a stunting rate of 28.8% among children under five years of age in South Africa in 2024. This statistic means that nearly 3 out of every 10 children in this age group experience impaired growth due to long-term undernutrition and poor health conditions.

The Child Support grant is helping those parents who can not raise their child due to poverty. They can get R560 and R280 as a top-up per month to raise a child.

Foster Child Grant

This grant is for foster parents who are currently raising a foster child. The payment is R1,250 per month.

SRD R370 Grant

Social Relief of Distress grant is for those who have lost their jobs and businesses in the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant payment is R370 per month.

Grant-in-aid

This grant is an additional relief for people who are already receiving either the Older Persons grant. Disability grant or War Veterans grant. The payment is R560 per month.

Care Dependency Grant

UNICEF reports that more than 240 million children worldwide live with at least one form of disability. This estimate includes children who face physical, sensory, intellectual, or developmental limitations that affect daily activities and social participation.

The Care Dependency Grant is for a child living with an extreme type of disability. The grant payment is set to R2,320 per month.

War Veterans Grant

Those who either fought in the Korean War or World War Two are the main eligible candidates for this grant. The payment is R2 340 per month.

How Does the SRD Grant Provide Financial Relief in South Africa?

The SRD grant was issued to combat the COVID-19 financial crisis. At that time, the lockdown led people to survive without food and employment.  However, the SRD grant was introduced with the amount of R350 per month for one person.

Today, South Africa’s unemployment rate is 31.4% according to SANews. To tackle this issue, the R370 grant is playing a great role. Here are the explanations:

1. Basic Food and Daily Needs Support

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant provides R370 per month to unemployed citizens in South Africa. Many beneficiaries use this amount to purchase basic food items such as maize meal, bread, and cooking oil. This monthly payment helps households maintain minimum nutrition levels during unemployment periods.

2. Temporary Income for Unemployed Citizens

South Africa recorded an unemployment rate of 31.4% according to SANews. The SRD Grant gives temporary financial assistance to individuals who have no salary, no unemployment insurance, and no government income support. This support reduces immediate financial pressure during job searches.

3. Support for Job Search Expenses

Job seekers require money for internet data, transportation, and printing documents. The SRD Grant helps unemployed citizens pay for these small but necessary expenses. This financial help allows applicants to submit job applications and attend interviews.

4. Reduction of Extreme Poverty Levels

The SRD Grant supports millions of low-income residents in South Africa. Even a small payment, such as R370, helps households manage rent contributions, electricity tokens, or basic household supplies. This assistance reduces the risk of extreme poverty.

5. Financial Stability During Economic Recovery

Economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic remains slow in South Africa. The SRD Grant provides a consistent monthly payment that helps vulnerable citizens maintain financial stability. This support allows beneficiaries to manage essential expenses while waiting for employment opportunities.

How to Check Your SASSA Balance Status?

You can check your SASSA SRD balance status using your mobile banking app, ATM, and SMS. Here is how to do it:

Using Mobile Banking App:

  1. Open your mobile banking app and log in to your account.
  2. Now check your bank account balance and get your SRD balance status.

Using ATM:

  1. Go to your bank’s ATM.
  2. Insert your SASSA card and dial your PIN.
  3. Check your card balance, and this is also your SRD balance.

Balance Status Via SMS:

  1. Send an SMS to your banking issued number to check your bank balance.
  2. Get a reply from the bank with your SRD balance status.

Future of SRD Grant

SASSA and the government of South Africa stated many times that we are going to terminate the grant. However, the grant was extended every year. Last year, in 2025, the government decided to end it in March 2025, but it was extended to March 2026.

Now the government has again extended the grant to March 2027. So we can say that the grant is going nowhere for now. However, if the grant ends, citizens can face extra financial burdens.

Statistics South Africa reported an inflation rate of 3.5% for the first quarter of 2026 in South Africa. During the same period, Nomakhosazana Meth confirmed an increase in the National Minimum Wage (NMW). The new wage rate increased from R28.79 to R30.23 per ordinary working hour in 2026, according to the South African Government News Agency.

This wage adjustment aims to support workers against rising living costs and maintain basic income stability. So the grant is very necessary for the South Africans in the next couple of years.

It should be extended for at least the next 15 to 20 years. Also, the R370 amount is not enough when the inflation rate is reached at 31.4%. It should be increased to R700.
